Tourism Resources

남구전경

The first tourism resource of Nam-gu is UN Memorial Cemetery, where 2,300 warriors from 16 nations, who participated in Korean War and died in the war, are enshrined. This cemetery is the only one in the world, and visited not only by Busan citizens, but also by national/international tourists. Recently, Nam-gu Office promotes the construction project of UN Memorial Cemetery; thus, it is an international place of interest. Also, directly beside it, Busan Municipal Museum is located, where about 10,000 cultural assets including cultural relics in Busan and Yeongnam area are displayed. Near it, Busan Cultural Center, which is the delivery room for Busan culture, is located. Here, various performances and exhibitions are provided in three performing places and two exhibition rooms. Outdoor performances are given at any time; thus, it is an optimal tourism course. Furthermore, the above-mentioned Oryukdo-islands, Igidae, Baekunpo and Sinseondae are distributed in the same area, attracting many tourists with their splendid views.

Oryukdo-IslandsMORE

Oryukdo-islands are the gateway of Korea and a symbol of Busan Port. These islands standing among fierce waves in the offing of Yongho-dong consist of six fantastic islands (address: 936 to 941 Yongho-dong). Those islands are Bangpaeseom-island (2,166㎡), Solseom-island (5,505㎡), Suriseom-island (5,313㎡), Songgotseom-island (2,073㎡), Gulseom-island (9,716㎡) and Deungdaeseom-island (3,416㎡) from the narrowest to the land. The water flows from the ceiling of the cave, which is in the biggest island, Gulseom-island (meaning Cave Island) is enough for one person's drink. The smallest island, Songgotseom (meaning Gimlet Island) is a pointed shape. Deungdaeseom (meaning Lighthouse Island), used to be called as Batseom (meaning Field Island) due to its flatness like a field, but it has been called Deungdaeseom after the lighthouse was established. The name Oryukdo (meaning Five or Six Islands) originates from the fact that Bangpaeseom-island and Solseom-island are almost linked below the middle; they are shown as two islands at high tide; shown as one island at low tide. In fact, however, they are shown as one or two depending on the viewer’s direction.

It is said that, in old days, sailors passing this area offered rice to the sea in order to sooth the Sea God and pray for safety. This custom might be made because of fierce tidal around Oryukdo-islands. All vessels should pass Oryukdo-islands in order to reach Busan Port, which is the biggest international port in Korea. Since old days, poets and painters keep visiting here, and still many people visit here. This place represents sprit of Busan citizens.

SinseondaeMORE

Sinseondae, the general name of sea bluffs and mountaintops located at the left bank of Yongdang-dong seashore, is located at the southern extremity of Uam Peninsula, and it has a superb view with sea cliffs and sea caves into which the igneous coast has been developed by the corrosion of waves.
Folklore said that Chiwon Choi (a scholar in the end of Shilla Dynasty) became a wizard and strolled here; the name 'Shinseongdae' is said to derive from the story that there are wizards' footprints and footmarks of white horses which the wizards rode in the big rock, called Mujedeung, on the mountain peak.
The geographical feature of Sinseondae resembles the shape of a dragon surrounding a pond; thus, the neighborhood is called Yongdang (Dragon Pond). According to another version, a blood stain was found in sandy soil when cutting Shinseongdae to dig a ditch; according to another story, a person named Gayajin became a dragon and ascended to the sky.
It is believed that classic music wizards played used to be heard In old times when approaching, and Sinseondae is covered with abundant pine trees. After Liberation, this place had been utilized as swimming resort thanks to its narrow but good-quality sands and beautiful view, and corresponding facilities used to be established; however, it has been changed into a manufacturing area after Dongmyeong Wood was established. Although the surrounding view has been somewhat changed, it is still considered as a wonderful place because we can watch Oryukdo-islands and Jodo-island, and even Tsushima Island of Japan in a fine weather, from the top of Sinseondae.

IgidaeMORE

Igidae is the area where Jangsan Peak (height: 225m), located in the east of Yongho-dong, meets with the sea. Many fantastic rocks and cliffs face the sea, showing 2km-long beautiful scene. In general, rocks look as if they fall into the sea on the slant. This superb scenic place is also in the spotlight as a fishing place. Until 1993, an army base was there and civilians' access had been prohibited. According to the book Dongraeyeongji, it is said that the place had been named Igidae (meaning “Place with Two kisaengs (singing and dancing girls)”) because there were two kisaengs’ graves on it. However, there are many different opinions.

Busan Port and Pier

Busan Port and Pier Image

Busan, the first port city in Korea, is a gateway connecting the Asian Continent and the Pacific. This 120-year-old historic port has deep water depth and little difference between the rise and fall of the tide, which are the best conditions for a port. Busan Port consisting of Buk-port, Nam-port, Gamcheon-port and Dadaepo-port, handles 45% marine exports and 95% container freight. Among them, Gamman Pier, located in Nam-gu, was built as the 4th step of the Busan Port Development Project (1994 to 1997) with the latest equipment, and operated by Choyang Shipping, Hanjin Shipping, Hyundai Merchant Marine and The Korea Express. Annual 1.28 million TEU can be handled. Also, Sinseondae Pier was opened in June 1991, as the 3rd step of the Busan Port Development Project, and is equipped with cargo-working equipment and computer system including express container crane. Annual 1.28 million TEU can be handled, and it is operated by Sinseondae Container Terminal Co., Ltd. The night view brilliantly illuminated for work is worth seeing.

Tourist Course

It is effective to bind Busan in one course. It is reasonable to combine other areas with Nam-bu, and define detailed courses depending on the tour period.
Near Nam-bu, there are Gwanganri and Haeundae swimming beaches. So, it is recommended to combine these areas with Nam-bu tour, which starts UN Memorial Cemetery → Busan Museum → Busan Cultural Center → Dongmyeong Buddhist Temple → Sinseondae → Baeunpo → Igidae → Oryukdo-islands. In this tour, all beautiful spots and sightseeing places can be visited. This course can be started in the opposite direction, giving no change in the schedule. If time allows, visiting the Cultural Center last can be a meaningful sightseeing experience by appreciating a good performance.

Tourist Information Center

Tourist Information Center and the map for Busan tours are prepared by Korea National Tourism Organization in front of UN Memorial Cemetery. Also, there is a guide map prepared in front of the museum. Four employees wait for visitors in the Tourist Information Center of UN Memorial Cemetery, and the souvenir store operated by Gu Office is located near, selling souvenirs at moderate price. ☎ 82-51-625-1608
