In order to enhance citizens’understanding about Korean culture and provide data for professional research workers, the Busan Museum displays Korean cultural properties from the prehistoric era to today. The Museum also preserves results of academic research and the relics excavated during these studies to study prehistoric, ancient, and middle age culture in Busan. In addition, it performs diverse projects in order to improve citizen's recognition of Korean culture as well as promote social education. Also, it is used as a place of relaxation for Busan citizens. There are outdoor exhibitions and six indoor exhibition rooms: Prehistoric Busan, Three Kingdoms, Arts and Crafts, Pottery,
Drawing, Busan in Modern Times, and Busan Folklore. Besides the permanent exhibition rooms, planning exhibitions are shown with special subjects. So far, Busan Museum has held a Submarine Relics Exhibition of Shinan, an Anapji Excavated Relics Exhibition, Peru National Treasure Exhibition, Gaya Civilization Exhibition, Emperor Ying Zheng of Qin Kingdom Exhibition, Gold Treasure Exhibition, Ancient Egyptian Culture Exhibition and many more.

The total cultural properties, including not only 5,800 excavated assets from Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do Province, but also other relics donated or purchased, amount to 10,865 in total. 460 assets are exhibited in the indoor exhibition rooms, and 40 stone assets are exhibited outdoors.
