Here at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea, the only one of its kind in the world, rest heroic braves from a number of UN nations, who sacrificed their lives for world peace and freedom.

Parliament of Korea, in order to honor the services and sacrifices made by the UN forces during the Korean War, volunteered this land for permanent use by UN as a cemetery in August 1955, and the General Assembly accepted the proposal, the UN Resolution #977(X) to establish a United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea in December 1955.

Along with the diplomatic point mentioned above, the UNMCK will aspire itself to become a site for education and tourism. Especially since the generations who witnessed the tragic Korean War either have been almost all passed away or will have passed away soon, the UNMCK has become even more important for future generations as a historic, educational site which may teach them the tragedies of war and importance of peace.

The UNMCK has been becoming a more and more important tour site as the unique UN cemetery in the world where tributes are paid to the fallen. It is our duty to manage this sactity to effect's its role as a landmark of Busan, where the visitors would pay tribute, acquire historic facts regarding the Korean War, and provide a sight to behold.

UN Support

After the war broke out in Korea on June 25, 1950 when North Korea suddenly invaded South Korea, UN hurried to convene a meeting of the 2nd UN Security Council and decided on June, 28, 1950 to dispatch UN troops to Korea. This remains yet, in the history of UN, as the unique resolution where troops are dispatched in the name of UN.

In all, 21 nations volunteered for assistance under the UN flag to help Korea--16 nations provided combat troops, equipments and armaments while 5 nations provided non-combat assistance by dispatching medical ships with staff and medicine. During the Korean War (June 25, 1950 ~ July 27, 1953), there were UN casualties of 40,896 from 17 nations including Norwegian.
